Pace to speed in one line
Pace and speed are the same information written in opposite directions. Pace counts minutes per unit of distance; speed counts distance per hour. Flip one and you get the other:
5:30 /km = 5.5 min → 60 ÷ 5.5 = 10.9 km/h · 10.0 km/h → 60 ÷ 10 = 6:00 /km
The mental-math version for the gym: a 6:00/km runner needs 10.0 km/h; every 30 seconds of pace faster adds roughly 1 km/h at typical training speeds. In miles, 6:00/mi is exactly 10.0 mph, and 8:00/mi is 7.5 mph. When your plan says one thing and the console says another, this page is the translator.
The 1% incline convention
Indoors there is no air resistance and the belt keeps you honest at a constant speed, so running on a level treadmill costs slightly less energy than the same pace outdoors. The widely used fix, based on a well-known 1996 laboratory study, is setting the incline to 1% to approximate outdoor energy cost at normal training and race paces. In practice: easy jogs are fine at 0–1%, quality sessions at race pace are usually set at 1%, and anything above that is deliberate hill work — not a correction.
Trust, but verify your treadmill
Consumer treadmills drift out of calibration: belt wear, lubrication and even user weight can make the displayed speed differ a few percent from true belt speed. If a "10.0 km/h" run feels mysteriously heroic or suspiciously easy compared to the road, the machine — not you — is probably the variable. Compare perceived effort and heart rate to your outdoor runs at the same nominal pace before drawing conclusions about fitness.
